The Most Insane Bullets in the World

The Most Insane Bullets in the World

There are a lot of different and cool bullet types out there, so it comes as no surprise that a YouTube channel would jump on the chance for some engagement with the claim that they’re going to give you the rundown on “the most insane bullets in the world.” That’s what the Origins Explained does in this video – or so they think. It isn’t often a video grabs our attention in quite this way. Read on to find out why.

What Types of Bullets are There?

According to Origins Explained, there are some crazy bullets. For example, the opening line in the video is — we kid you not — “from being filled with nuclear waste to shattering on impact, here are eleven of the most insane bullets in the world.” This claim to bullet infamy is made while a guy with a flamethrower does his thing in the video, which is a tiny bit confusing.

It comes as no surprise the gimmicky Dragon’s Breath round is the first one the video mentions. The video gravely intones that the shotshells “consist mostly of magnesium pellets and shards…considered some of the coolest and most exotic shotgun rounds ever. It is not considered a tactical load and is really just for fun although it can be quite dangerous. ….[it] basically turns your gun into a flamethrow.”

So, what’s the real story on Dragon’s Breath? The guys over at Ballistic Magazine explain it this way:

“Dragon’s breath is a special type of “incendiary effect” round for 12-gauge shotguns. Normally chambered in 12 gauge 2.75-inch shot shells, dragon’s breath ammo consists primarily of magnesium pellets or shards. When fired, the round sparks giving the appearance of a flame like … yes, dragon’s breath. Those sparks can shoot out to around 100 feet. We’ve read claims that it fires out to 300 feet, but we’re a little skeptical of that. Also not sure we’d want it to fire that far.”

Okay, so perhaps you can see why they’d put that shotshell in this list. Makes some sense, right? Well, hold onto your guns, because it gets a lot more fun as the list goes on.

Right away we have number 10: hollow points. We all know hollow points are ideal for self-defense because they are designed to expand while simultaneously slowing down on impact. That means they create larger wound cavities, stopping attackers faster, and greatly reduce the chances of over-penetration. Origins Explained, however, thinks they’re “outlawed” for use by the military and also illegal in many states here in the United States, which is wholly inaccurate and untrue.

What do you guys think about this list?
